A new study has found the "majority of people would feel uncomfortable if a woman started breastfeeding in a pub".

Lansinoh, a baby company, conducted the research in a bid to discover attitudes towards breastfeeding mums.

The poll, taken by 1,000 people across the UK, asked participants to vote on places where they felt breastfeeding was acceptable or not, reports WalesOnline.

Pubs topped the list of places people felt most uncomfortable with women breastfeeding, with a whopping 51% of people reporting they would feel uncomfortable if a woman wanted to feed her child in the public space.

Breastfeeding in restaurants made 48% of people feel uncomfortable, with 40% unhappy if a woman started breastfeeding in a cafe.

And despite outdoor spaces topping the most comfortable spaces, still 16% of people felt uncomfortable with women breastfeeding at the beach, and 17% uncomfortable at the park.

Men are apparently much more comfortable with breastfeeding, with only 29% of men feeling uncomfortable on average, compared to 33% of women.

A whopping 44% of women surveyed said they would feel uncomfortable with breastfeeding on the London Underground , compared to just 34% of men – a 10% difference.

The over 65s were the most accepting, with those aged 55 to 64 least accepting, the research found.

And of those taking part in the poll, half said they wouldn’t be happy if a woman started breastfeeding in front of teenagers and over a third of people surveyed were not even comfortable seeing a woman breastfeed in front of another woman.

The Equality Act 2010 protects mums by making it illegal for anyone to ask a breastfeeding woman to stop breastfeeding, or cover up or leave a public place.

Lansinoh, who conducted the research, are hoping to stop the stigma by encouraging women to nominate places that support breastfeeding mums for a new awards ceremony.

To nominate visit www.lansinoh.co.uk/feedwithconfidence . The closing date for entries is December 31 and the winners will be announced in January.
