Officials say the ground beef, sold between April 6 and 16, may be contaminated with E. coli.

Meat-eaters in Maine should check the freezer, due to a public health alert issued for ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli. Hannaford Supermarkets announced Monday that the Hannaford brand 85% lean ground beef products sold between April 6 and 16 are possibly contaminated. The alert includes 58 stores in Maine, 27 in New Hampshire and 3 in Massachusetts. You can find a list of the stores impacted here. No confirmed illnesses have been reported as a result of consumption of the meat. The USDA describes E. coli as a "potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps" anywhere from two to eight days after exposure. The "small packs" would have the UPC number 22312600000. The "family packs" have the UPC number 22312700000. Both pack sizes would have the product sell-by or lot date of April 6-18, 2024.Mainers across the state who shop at Hannaford should check their freezers for the products. The beef may be returned to the store for a full refund, or thrown out. The alert is part of a nationwide notice put out by the USDA.
