Breastfeeding plays a crucial role in the growth and well-being of the child. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), fewer than half of infants under six months old are exclusively breastfed.
Breastmilk is safe, and clean and contains antibodies that help protect against many common childhood illnesses. It might look easy, but breastfeeding can be a tedious task for new mothers.
Dr Juhi Saxena, Lactation Consultant, Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Delhi explained that breastfeeding, as they say, is nature’s perfect food and is not just a source of sustenance (bolstering their immune system to aid in digestion) but a shield against the adversities of infancy and beyond.
“It consists of antibodies that fortify your baby’s defenses, warding off allergies, obesity, asthma, and many other health concerns that may lurk on the horizon, especially for the initial months of infancy. Breastfeeding isn’t just about providing essential nutrients to your little one but a healthy composition of various biological elements such as genes, hormones, and the mother’s diet,” Dr. Saxena told Financial Express.com.
However, for first-time mothers, breastfeeding can come with challenges, that may stem from common mistakes that mothers unknowingly make. By addressing these pitfalls, mothers can enhance the breastfeeding experience for both mother and child, she highlighted.
“One of the foremost mistakes is the improper latch. A poor latch can cause discomfort for the mother and insufficient milk intake for the baby. Another frequent mistake is neglecting adequate hydration and nutrition. Breastfeeding requires extra fluids and nutrients to support milk production. Mothers should prioritize staying hydrated and consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains,” Dr. Saxena told Financial Express.com.
Additionally, certain foods and beverages, such as caffeine and alcohol, should be avoided altogether, as they can pass through breast milk and affect the baby.
Furthermore, many mothers overlook the importance of seeking support and guidance. Breastfeeding can be challenging, but by avoiding common mistakes and seeking support when needed, mothers can optimize their breastfeeding experience for themselves and their little ones, she highlighted.
“Lastly, improper positioning during breastfeeding can lead to discomfort and inadequate milk flow. Mothers should experiment with various positions, such as the cradle hold, football hold, or side-lying position, to find what works best for them and their babies. Additionally, utilizing pillows during breastfeeding aids in achieving optimal positioning and comfort for both the baby and the mother,” Dr. Saxena told Financial Express.com.
