A federal grand jury in Puerto Rico has returned an indictment charging a man with his alleged involvement in a double murder in neighbouring Dominican Republic.

Aldrin Manuel Lara-Martínez was charged with conspiracy to kill persons in a foreign country and the discharging of firearms in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Stephen Muldrow, United States Attorney of the District of Puerto Rico, said documents presented in court alleged that on August 18, 2023, Lara-Martínez flew from Logan International Airport, in Massachusetts to Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic and he picked up a car he rented two days earlier.

“On August 20, 2023, in the early morning hours, two men and one woman left a night club located on Fabio Herrera Venue and went to the fast-food place called ‘El Campa Berguer Meat’. While they were stopped at a traffic light, the car that Lara-Martínez had rented pulled up and Lara-Martínez opened fire into their vehicle.  Two victims died as the result of gunshot wounds, and one individual suffered gunshot wounds,” Muldrow said.

Muldrow said wanted posters were issued for Lara-Martínez and he evaded capture for several weeks.

The attorney said Lara-Martínez later fled Dominican Republic and he was caught by US Coast Guard on September 29, 2023, as he allegedly attempted to re-enter Puerto Rico on an illegal migrant vessel.

Muldrow said Lara-Martínez is facing a minimum of ten years and a maximum of life imprisonment if convicted on the crimes.
